SUPERGIRL Announces Final Season

After having survived cancelation on one network, only to resurface a year later on The CW, and battling to survive a “crisis” SUPERGIRL announces its upcoming Sixth Season will be its last!

More powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist has excelled as one of the TV trilogies of primetime heroes adapted from the DC comics and brought into fruition by super-producer Greg Berlanti. This week it was announced that the show would end after wrapping its upcoming Sixth Season! The series joined The CW’s line-up in 2016 after cancelation from its original home on CBS, which wanted “in” on the superhero genre phenomenon when the iron was hot!

Arrow starring Stephen Amell which just ended its run with its Eight Season was the cornerstone of Berlanti’s DC TV universe on The CW, which has since extended to include DC’s Stargirl and will soon premiere Superman & Lois.

Along with The Flash starring Grant Gustin and the team show DC’s Legends of Tomorrow when Supergirl landed on The CW, it revolutionized the “crossover” experience, and this past year, the five series took on the epic effort of bringing to life the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” story arc based on the best-selling comic book series, which redefined the primetime landscape and brought most (if not all) of Berlanti’s heroes including Black Lightning all onto “Earth-Prime” part of one combined universe following the template of Marvel’s expanded cinematic universe.

With the pandemic having put a considerable pause on productions and pushing all the network’s premieres to 2021, many of the series have only started to bring their casts and crews back together, so it was incredibly startling when the announcement was made that when Supergirl returns for Season Sixth, it will be the series last. In its run the series has served as an allegory for issues relating to freedom of speech and the importance of a free press, xenophobia, homophobia, all explored through the lens of a young woman’s sensibilities.

Benoist imbued her character Kara Danvers, for all intents the “every-girl” who happened to the first cousin of none other than the world’s greatest hero, Superman, with a believable enthusiasm of self-discovery and a purpose to defend what’s right and just in the world. Along the way, Kara uncovers a passion for reporting the truth and shared in adventurous super-heroics alongside Central City’s Scarlet Speedster, The Flash (whom she often teamed up with, including for a musical episode). Supergirl was paired this past season with Batwoman for its inaugural year.

No word has been given as the network’s decision to end the series, but it will pave the way for the spin-off Superman & Lois and with Batwoman returning for Season 2 with an all-new lead under the cowl (Javicia Leslie will be replacing Ruby Rose after exiting the show at the end of the season) and DC’s Stargirl assuming her place in The CW primetime, there will be plenty of “supergirl” power coming in 2021!

Supergirl Season 6 is set to premiere early in 2021. The Complete Fifth Season is currently available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital download.
