A Pop Music Feature

The first track off of CONFESSIONS II sets the tone for the sequel to MADONNA’s 2005 dance opus, and while it looks forward, the production pays homage to the origins of House music and its pioneers.

From the looks of it, Madonna can’t contain herself! After an earth-shattering entrance to the Coachella Music Festival, deliciously sharing the stage alongside Sabrina Carpenter, the Queen is feeding another tasty morsel to her fans. This time making a live appearance at the West Hollywood hot spot, The Abbey, to premiere tracks off of her upcoming new album, CONFESSIONS II. Arriving with her partner in crime, Stuart Price, expertly spinning the turntable, Madonna debuted at least 3 as-yet-unreleased singles to the gathered masses.

Proving that her dedication to the dance genre and devotion to the LGBTQ+ community remain close to her heart, as promised, the theme of the much-anticipated sequel to her 2005 hit, Confessions on a Dance Floor, is meant to resurrect and revitalize the nightlife culture that has all but been eradicated from the scene. With the intro track to the new album, “I Feel So Free,” blazing across the consciousness with its trance-like appeal, it pays homage to House music roots while doing what Madonna does best: reigniting the audience's interest in something that has been lost.

Come On, Meet Me on the Dance Floor

In her manifesto, Motha - Madonna’s latest persona - illustrates, “the dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: a ritualistic space where movement replaces language.” Once upon a time, that was a hard-earned truth. Twenty years ago, the advent of the internet and hook-up apps systematically destroyed nightlife and club culture. In a society that has become so obsessed with its own ego and the pursuit of celebrity and is devoid of any self-awareness, the exercise and communal activation that were so prevalent in dance clubs cease to exist.

It was almost ironic that one of the last parties held at The Roxy dance club in New York City was the record release event for Madonna’s COADF. It wasn’t long after that that this legendary space shuttered its doors permanently, followed then by most of the city’s big room venues. Madonna has always kept her creative instincts connected to the pulse of what’s current, and it’s not a shock to anyone that the fifteenth album of her four-decade-long (and counting) career is a dance album.

In these uncertain times, full of political strife and an America fighting for its democratic soul, what the world needs now is a complete reboot. CONFESSIONS II is the tonic needed to cleanse and reinvigorate the collective soul, to reinspire the community, and, most importantly, to direct the masses to come and meet us on the dance floor. With the new album’s premiere track, “I Feel So Free,” Madonna is inviting us all to get together.

The track co-produced by Price takes from the origins of House music. It samples from the classic Lil’ Louis & The World hit “French Kiss.” Those moans of ecstasy that you hear in the background are lifted right out of the original 1989 hit track. Madonna’s version pays homage to that original composition, while it echoes the similarities to her own “Future Lovers,” which harkens back to the Giorgio Moroder-Donna Summer classic “I Feel Love.”

A New Persona

As the perceived first track on CONFESSIONS II, “I Feel So Free” sonically sits within a similar style to its predecessor, while still evoking a very modern tonality of its own. Madonna has never been one to repeat herself, preferring to experiment rather than revisit, so even though the new album is being marketed as a sequel, don’t expect a rehash of COADF. With that album having just marked its twentieth anniversary, it is certain that its successor will mark new territory.

Regardless, this marks an unprecedented beginning for the Queen of Pop. In a career that remains unmatched, the blueprint by which all other pop stars aspire, Madonna continues her efforts to inspire and pass the baton. The first official single off the new album will be the collaboration “Bring Your Love,” the duet with Sabrina Carpenter that the pair debuted at Coachella. With suggestions that Madonna will want to take the new songs out on the road and tour, undoubtedly, 2026 will have many of her fans lining up to confess.
