A Collectible Figure Unboxing
Hasbro’s Marvel Legends series is getting a “reboot” with the new Maximum Series of highly-articulated and super-detailed line of action figures with the debut of none other than everyone’s favorite web-slinger!

Nostalgia continues its reign as king, as is evident in the latest release to come down the pipe from the folks at Hasbro. As part of their recent celebratory run of Marvel Legends Secret Wars action figures, based on Mattel’s original toy line from the '80s that were calculated to draw inspiration from the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars 12-issue comic book maxi-series, continues to expand from its initial wave by adding none other than ICEMAN. A founding member of the X-Men, later a member of the Defenders, wasn’t among the core group of heroes that the omnipotent Beyonder whisked to his battle world. Still, an action figure was produced as part of the second wave of Mattel figures but was distributed internationally rather than domestically, making the toy a rare find for collectors.

With Hasbro’s Marvel Legends series of figures paying homage to that classic run, each figure includes a shield with a holographic decoder (that reveals our hero’s secret identity) and power-accurate accessories. The original 5 figures in the line featured Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Spider-Man (Black Costume), the villainous Titania, and The Beyonder (in his human form). The addition of Iceman to the original run is pretty exciting, since the figure represents one of the purest design reproductions of the character, as he is most known to fans of the hero, especially those who associate Iceman with his popular Saturday morning cartoons.

Robert “Bobby” Drake was first introduced to comic readers in 1963’s X-Men #1. The brainchild of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the team of adolescents represented the core of a new power set within the Marvel Universe — mutants! Where Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four gained their unique crime-fighting abilities in strange accidents, mutants were born with their gifts and assembled by Professor Charles Xavier, who is dedicated to training his wards in the use of their powers for the betterment of mankind. In contrast, others, like the X-Men’s nemesis, Magneto, are determined to rule humanity.

The Iceman, who can control freezing temperatures and use his powers defensively, creating ice shards and shields, and an ice tobagin to propel him over distances, is the youngest member of the founding quintet. The action figure is cast in a translucent “ice blue” material that replicates the activated ice form that Bobby takes when he is powered up. He is wearing the distinctive X-symbol embossed on his belt buckle. The figure is perfectly proportioned and features multiple points of articulation so that you can fashion Iceman in any number of battle poses or casual stances.

Along with the accompanying “Secret Wars” decoder shield, the figure includes an additional set of hands and head, two ice effect blasts, an ice sled with pegs for posing Iceman in various positions, and a snowball. Adding the separately released Marvel Legends Firestar action figure to the mix, and bringing in the “Secret Wars” Spider-Man in his Black Suit, completes the triumphant trio that dominated the Saturday morning cartoon block of the '80s. And, yes, I’m aware that the black symbiote suit wouldn’t make its debut for a couple of years, but it still makes for a great look alongside his teammates.
Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Series of action figures continues to prove a delight, and realizing these brand initiatives and spanning the scope of the Marvel universe is extremely exciting to fans and collectors of any age.
