A Collectible Unboxing Feature
The silent assassin remains one of the most enigmatic characters in the long-loved franchise and STORM SHADOW gets a much-deserved reimagining for Hasbro’s collection of 6-inch figures.
Since his introduction, there have been few other characters that became as sought after as STORM SHADOW. The Cobra Ninja joined the 3 ¾” G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero action figure toy line-up in 1984 and became a pivotal player also appearing in Marvel Comics. The straight-up cool factor of the masked ninja, sporting twin swords, a bow with quiver, and nunchucks, all clad in white made him an instant favorite with me as a kid, although I was always torn by the fact that the ninja represented COBRA, The Enemy.
The character’s backstory would be far more intricate and fleshed out further when Storm Shadow made his first appearance in Issue #21 of the popular Marvel Comics based on the toy line, written and created by Larry Hama (who has since returned to the franchise with the newly minted issue #301 published by Image/Skybound Comics). The ninja’s origin story would be irrevocably linked with that of the ebony-clad mysterious G.I. JOE Commando, Snake-Eyes, and would cross-section with both Stalker and Scarlett.
During the character’s service to the terrorist organization COBRA, it is ultimately revealed that the skilled assassin had infiltrated their ranks, built trust, and schemed to learn the identity of the COBRA agent who murdered his mentor and head of his family. Storm Shadow had been framed for the Hard Master’s death, and this caused a bitter rift between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, who both trained under the same house, the Arashikage Clan, and shared that brotherhood. Eventually, the truth is uncovered and Storm Shadow joins Snake-Eyes in taking down a common foe.

The arrival of Hasbro’s line of G.I. JOE CLASSIFIED Action Figures has given adult collectors far more than just nostalgic euphoria to return to the popular toys. The larger figures (average at 6”) are far more articulated (at least 20 points) and highly detailed, with matching accessories that complete the bill. The box art packaging is also quite stunning and allows for the purposeful display of your collection. The STORM SHADOW action figure is no exception! Featuring detailing that is reminiscent of the original release, the upgrades are spectacular without compromising the OG design.
The Storm Shadow is perfectly articulated for action poses and attack stances, whether confronting or standing by Snake-Eyes. The boxed version of the figure, released earlier in the line, includes a cowl for added mystery and two ninja swords. The figure also includes a quiver with arrows and a power bow, the assassin’s weapon of choice. The only obvious miss is the exception of the nunchucks that were part and parcel of the original 3 3/4” 1984 release. Not that in close quarters, Storm Shadow would rather prefer to take on a foe hand-to-hand or toe-to-toe.
This is a worthwhile addition to your growing collection. The more recent release of the action figure is on a back card that recreates the original availability of the Storm Shadow figure and comes with a couple of accessories, including detachable grips to properly pose with a bow and arrow, or blades in hand. It also comes with a stand to pose and display your figure on a shelf. The back card features a classic file card with “classified” info on Storm Shadow’s background.
