An Entertainment News Feature
When one door closes, another opens on a brand new day for actress Sadie Sink, who swings into action in Stranger Things fashion on the role of a lifetime…and alternate futures!

If the rumors are true, Netflix’s Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is stepping into one of the most controversial characters in Marvel Comics, as the rumor mill speculates that the actress will be playing Rachel Summers in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The heroine was first introduced in the landmark The Uncanny X-Men #141 (1981). The first of a two-part epic in the milestone storyline “Days of Future Past” by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, which set up the dystopian future that the team of mutants is dedicated to preventing.
A little background…
In the story arc (the basis for the film of the same name), Rachel Summers uses her powers to transport the psyche of an adult Kitty Pryde into her present-day teenage self to help the X-Men stop the murderous Mystique from assassinating a prominent politician. In Rachel’s timeline, the murder of Senator Robert Kelly leads to the incarceration of all mutants in internment camps and the rapid launch of the Sentinel Program, which unleashes the treacherous automations on the population, establishing a police state.

The present-day X-Men emerge victorious, and the senator is saved, but we’re not done…
Years later, after apparently thwarting Mystique’s plans, Rachel physically manifests in the present day. Even after saving Kelly’s life, the future that the X-Men were trying to prevent still comes to pass. Seeking out their help, Rachel travels in time, but finds the past isn’t exactly as she remembers. For instance, she learns that Jean Grey sacrificed herself to prevent the Phoenix Force from growing out of control, which would mean that in this timeline, Rachel could not exist — since her mother, Jean Grey, is dead. Without a clear path, Rachel Summers joins the X-Men and inherits the power of the Phoenix.
Eventually, the truth about The Phoenix Force and how it impersonated Jean Grey, placing her in suspended animation for years, is revealed. The mother and daughter are reunited, but Rachel’s embrace of the Phoenix's power creates a rift between them that takes time to heal. Rachel also reveals herself to her father, Scott Summers. Uncertain about whether her future will ever come to pass, Rachel remains a hero in the present day, as an active member of the X-Men and a founding member of the UK-based team, Excalibur.

Sink In
With Sadie Sink stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actress has enhanced a profile and fanbase that has already embraced her role as Max Mayfield on Stranger Things. She joined the hit Netflix original series in its second season, and quickly won over the hearts of dedicated viewers, especially when her character came under attack by the series’ big bad in its subsequent seasons. The announcement that she was cast in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, came on the heels of the Netflix series' monumental Final Season promo push.

Her role has not been officially confirmed, and speculation has ranged from playing a new love interest for Peter Parker, perhaps Gwen Stacy, or the crafty Black Cat. Other rumors have suggested that Sink will be playing Spider-Man’s amazing friend, Angelica Jones, also known as Firestar, but most recently, the name Rachel Summers has come up, attached to the actress. With the legacy X-Men playing a significant role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday crossover, the introduction of Rachel Summers suggests
that Marvel Studios has serious plans in place for the X-Men.

Kevin Feige has said that the X-Men, like the Fantastic Four, will be making their MCU debut soon, but has provided few details on exactly what shape Marvel’s mightiest mutants will take alongside the growing narrative. Fans are waiting patiently, as 2026 will prove a stellar year to watch as both Spider-Man and the Avengers hit theaters, continuing the epic saga.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is hitting theaters on July 31, 2026, with Avengers: Doomsday premiering in December.
