The Batman mythology transcends demographics. The DC Comics character, created by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane, has a story and perspective that has resonated with audiences of every generation, and every continent on the globe. The story of young Bruce Wayne, a child of wealth and privilege, whose life is destroyed by a gunman who cold-bloodedly slays his parents on the streets of Gotham City. Inheriting a fortune and a legacy that inspires him to seek justice against the criminal element and corruption that threaten his city, Wayne swears to become a symbol that will tip the scales against the corrupt, defending the innocent. He becomes a predator, a Dark Knight defender — The Batman.

On the big screen, the hero has been portrayed as an everyman by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s blockbuster Batman (1989). In Christopher Nolan’s trilogy (2005 - 2012), Christian Bale projected a disciplined and methodical defender, in contrast to Ben Affleck, who took up the cape and cowl during Zack Snyder’s reign (2016 - 2021). And most recently, Matt Reeves introduced a Dark Knight detective early in his career, with Robert Pattinson bringing to the screen an early incarnation of The Batman, using his skills and arsenal to deduce when a notoriously manipulative madman will strike next, before it is too late. Each time, each Batman was colored in a palette inspired by the creative minds that first made him a legend in the pages of DC Comics.

With every interpretation, fans’ imaginations were reignited, and they’d instantly become reinvested. The same is true for The Batman’s many reimaginings across animated media, from the hero’s Saturday morning arrival as a “Super Friend” to the Emmy-winning Animated Series that revolutionized the way audiences indulged in animation. The series of features in Warner Bros. Animation's arsenal has adapted comic book storylines like “The Long Halloween” and “The Killing Joke” to deliver all-new versions of Batman. Most recently, the original Batman Ninja animated films evoked the traditions of anime in the Dark Knight’s universe.

The latest release, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, available on 4K Ultra HD and Digital, reimagines the Caped Crusader defending his people and their sacred culture from the ravages of invaders determined to bring down the legend of the bat at whatever cost!

When Batman Takes Flight

The latest animated adventure from Warner Bros. Animation, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, is set in 16th-century Mesoamerica, when Spanish conquistadors searched the world, spreading their religious ideology, bringing disease, and pillaging the riches of civilizations. The Aztec culture had long developed and thrived in the Americas, creating unparalleled marvels in irrigation to harvest crops and creating canal systems that connected villages across many distances. They also amassed riches and stored gold, which drew attention, avarice, and suspicion from outsiders who felt that the cultures were steeped in savage mysticism and ungodliness.

Actor Jay Hernandez embodies the myth of the bat, as Yohualli, the Aztec Batman, who rises to inspire his people to raise arms against the conquering invaders. Hernandez portrays our hero in the English version of the film, Horacio Garcia Rojas is Yohualli in the native Spanish Language voice of the people of Mesoamerica. The feature film can be experienced in both English and Spanish for a genuinely thrilling experience. The film is directed by Juan Meza-León.

The feature is art directed by Diego Andrés Olascoaga Alba, who is responsible for giving the Aztec Batman his historically accurate look and feel. As the art department had to adapt many of the hero’s rogues' gallery, including versions of Catwoman, into appropriately suitable alternatives, such as the Jaguar Woman. Additionally, other familiar foes, such as Two-Face and The Joker, as well as allies like Batman’s loyal butler, Alfred, are reinterpreted to fit the era.

Special Features

The disc is packaged with Special Features that provide all-new insight into adapting the Batman mythology for a 16th-century style and drama, including a gallery of artists’ renders of character profiles that bring Aztec Batman to life, squarely placing the heroes and villains in the 1520s.
