iReview | BATMAN: The Doom That Came to Gotham

A DC Animated Movie Feature

Nightmarish worlds collide in this full-length animated feature from DC Animated, BATMAN: THE DOOM THAT CAME TO GOTHAM is based on the gothic cosmic horror-fiction graphic novel inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and reimagines the Dark Knight’s mythology.

Madness awaits any whose gaze falls upon it! An ancient evil is threatening the denizens of Gotham City, and its origins can be traced back to the first colonists that settled and founded the modern metropolis, and in the DC Animated Movie BATMAN: The Doom that Came to Gotham Bruce Wayne must confront his destiny and become something more than man. Set in an alternate, elseworld of the multiverse, its the turn of the century — the 1920s — returning from an expedition, Wayne is thrust into a mystery that has attracted demonic forces beyond explanation.

Based on the three-issue mini-series of the same name and published under DC Comic’s Elseworlds imprint in 2000, written by super-star writer Mike Mignola, the latest animation adaptation richly pulls from the original source material inspired by the cosmic horror-fiction pulp stories of H.P. Lovecraft. The animated feature casts our hero returning to his fabled city, after a 20-year absence. Wayne has been following a mystery that has led him to an arctic wasteland, where the crew of an exploratory vessel is found dead trapped in the ice, and in the abandoned journals clues to their last days.

A dangerous menace from beyond our worlds is turning its tentacles on Gotham City. As the evil begins to set in, Gotham City’s Dark Knight Detective rises, to follow the clues that lead to supernatural monsters and mayhem. All of the main players and familiar faces from the contemporary prime earth of the Caped Crusader we know are represented in The Doom that Came to Gotham. In this “elseworld” escapade the Gotham City of the 1920s is battling its own corruption with prohibition forcing speakeasies to run rampant, and James Gordan’s police force is hopeful that Harvey Dent can turn the tide. Still, everyone is unaware of the looming threat in their midst.

On the night of his return to Wayne Manor, Bruce is visited by the otherworldly Jason Blood (the host of the demon Etrigan) who brings a daunting message: for the city to survive, Gotham must be burned to the ground! Bruce Wayne must die in order to become what he was always meant to be. It's the harbinger of a darker peril that leads Wayne on a desperate mission to save the very soul of Gotham City, from a horror that has far-reaching consequences. Like the stories from which it takes inspiration, The Doom That Came to Gotham classically blends genres to expertly glimpse a divergent “elseworld” set inside the DC comics character’s mythology.
