The popcorn flick that mesmerized at the matinee and transported audiences is now available to bring home in stunning 4K Ultra HD. The 1958 fantasy adventure classic The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is rereleased and will capture the imagination of movie fans of any age with its sweeping feel and special effects mastery.
Undoubtedly the forerunner of the blockbuster, the film opened as a sleeper hit, largely thanks to the legendary effects wizardry of Hollywood craftsman Ray Harryhausen, who conceptualized the visual look and spectacle and promoted his “Dynamation” brand for the first time. The film is the first in a trilogy of films that featured Sinbad, and was directed by Nathan Juran and starred Kerwin Mathews and Kathryn Grant as the romantic leads. The true stars of the film are the creatures and monstrous creations by Harryhausen.
The stop-motion work, which remains an inspiration for filmmakers today, is still among the most vivid and imaginative. The scenes when the heroes confront the Cyclops and the chained dragon are among the most memorable in film history. Also of note is Harryhausen’s transformation of the handmaiden into a serpentine hybrid that would become the inspiration for the mythological Gorgon, Medusa, in Clash of the Titans (1981), which would be Ray Harryhausen’s final film. The story is loosely adapted from the books that featured Sinbad, and would serve as the basis for the franchise follow-ups.
The 4K Ultra HD release includes the film in high-definition, along with the bonus content “The Harryhausen Chronicles” and the original “Theatrical Trailer.” The package is bundled with the Blu-ray release with legacy special features, including Audio Commentary with the filmmakers, featuring Ray Harryhausen, and loads more from the vault. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad remains a fan favorite and a welcome addition to any fantasy adventure collection. It’s a holiday classic that presents the groundbreaking legacy of Ray Harryhausen at its best.
