A Pop Music Feature

The Queen of Pop revisits her early years in COADF2’s standout dance anthem “Danceteria,” now getting its first official remix from remix legend Harry Romero.

T<he stand-out anthem is getting the remix treatment and racing onto the scene as CONFESSIONS II continues to break chart records.

Even before the album’s full release, everyone was talking about this track. It was featured in the film directed by TORSO that previewed the first 6 tracks from CONFESSIONS II. Immediately, fans were blown away by “Danceteria,” the ode to Madonna’s rise through the New York City art scene, and the 80s haunt that was ground zero for her introduction onto the dance floor. Madonna famously frequented the club, met one of her best friends there (makeup artist Debi Mazar), and hounded DJ Mark Kamins to play her demo tape “Everybody,” which he did.

Cut to some four decades and counting later, and Madonna has recounted the entire encounter and captured the vibe of the era in a bottle. It’s only appropriate that now, the track is getting its proper release as a single, and that its first commercially available remix, Harry Romero Remix, only reinforces what we already know. This high-energy anthem has the legs to reignite the club scene and set the dance floor on fire. Romero’s homegrown house beats, haunting bass, syncopation, and synth sounds elevate the original artfully. This is how we start the party!

Everyone Here Is a Work Of Art

If you’re not yet familiar with the name, get used to it! Harry Romero may have first gotten on your radar when the internet started circulating a vid of house legend DJ Honey Dijon @honeydijon spinning a hot remix of Madonna’s classic “Physical Attraction.” Everyone assumed the production was a Dijon original, since she’s known for suping up her setlists. This was, in fact, a bootleg mix of Harry Romero’s. A week later, his manager was getting the call from Madonna’s people that they wanted him to remix “Danceteria.”

The rest, as they might say, is history, but landing the premiere release remix of Madonna’s COADF2 most hotly appreciated track is a feat in a career for a remix producer that just can’t be overshadowed. If this latest era of the Queen of Pop is saying anything, it’s just how vital the club scene and nightlife culture is. “Danceteria” emphasizes that theme, especially with its callout hook “Everyone here is a work of art.” Madonna circulated in the 80s New York City art scene, thriving and inspired by the diversity of club culture, which was such an inherent part of the city’s mystique.
