A Collectible Unboxing
The ever-popular STAR TREK starship models have found a new curator with Fanhome collectibles and continue the tradition of providing collectors with high-end, beautifully detailed models based on the most recent ships in the line.
The property may have passed hands several times over the last decade. Still, STAR TREK Starships continue to prove themselves among the most popular with fans of the franchise that has continued to test and explore space, the final frontier. Eaglemoss Collectibles held the license and produced perhaps the most well-known and ambitious series of highly detailed starships based on the expanding Trek universe, as it continued to match exploration expectations from the 22nd century into the 24th and beyond.
With over 100 starship models in the series, ranging from 5 inches up to extra large “special editions” that presented the range in more significantly sized, more detailed releases, the Star Trek Starships brand would eventually pass hands over to another reputable collectible manufacturer until finding a new place with Fanhome. Partnering with top entertainment, gaming, and pop culture brands (including Star Wars, Marvel, and several famous anime lines), Fanhome has emerged determined to provide their subscribers with products they won’t find anywhere else.
The appropriation of The Official STAR TREK Starships Collection appears poised to be another success as Fanhome will be bringing to fans an all-new series of hero starships that have appeared in the final season of Star Trek: Picard and will likely include ships from Strange New Worlds and the two upcoming new original series Starfleet Academy and the Section 31 one-shot. The first hero ship available in the line is the U.S.S. TITAN NCC-80102-A, which featured prominently in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard and reunited The Next Generation crew.
A TITAN Indeed
The Titan has one of the most unique backstories of any ship in Trek canon. The vessel was first mentioned in the final act of 2002’s Star Trek X: Nemesis, which signaled the last feature-length film that starred The Next Generation crew. The original Titan was designed as part of a fan contest and would become the hero ship of a series of original novels that followed Captain William Riker as he led the exploratory ship on all-new adventures. The Luna-class ship would appear for the first time in canon in the final episodes of Season 1 of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Since then, it followed the storied history of many of Starfleet’s most legendary ships in the line, including the Enterprise, and passed the command chair to other explorers. In the latter part of the 24th century, a Constitution III-class* ship was rechristened the USS Titan and would carry the registry number NCC-80102-A. Captained by Liam Shaw, his first officer was none other than Seven Of Nine, and the ship and its crew would become centrifugal to averting a Borg invasion. A rescue mission to the edges of space unraveled into a mystery that drew two Federation enemies out of the shadows.
*Also referred to as the Neo-Constitution-class, the line was constructed to resemble and pay homage to the 22nd-century refit of a Constitution-class and had a similar outline, though compromised of significantly improved engines and computer systems of the era. The USS Titan measured approximately 560.5 meters in length, 100 meters longer than its Luna-class predecessor.
Joined by Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, Captain William Riker, and the rest of the Starship Enterprise-D’s senior bridge crew, the USS Titan successfully prevented a total assimilation of Earth with the passing of Capt. Shaw, who was lost in action defending his ship and crew, the center seat was given to Seven of Nine. In honor of the USS Titan’s efforts, the ship was again rechristened in honor of the veteran Starfleet officers who helped save the day as the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-G, making it the eighth starship to carry the name.
UnBoxing
Fortunately for collectors and die-hard fans, Fanhome didn’t go out of its way to reinvent the wheel. To protect continuity across collectibles, these models are constructed very similarly [from the actual VFX models] using the same die-cast and ABS plastic materials and thought process to detail that made the premiere series of models so popular. The Fanhome model of the USS Titan measures almost 9” [8.66 (220 mm)] in length and is expertly detailed to recapture the exterior texture of the Constitution-III class vessel. It elegantly floats on its acrylic base and is packaged with a magazine with insight into the ship.
As a big ship-of-the-line aficionado, the magazines have always been my favorite part of the package. The 16-page pamphlet-style booklet shows the ship in various shots covering it 360 degrees. The book also provides pertinent data, a summary of the ship’s exploits, and behind-the-scenes creative notes and illustrations, many seen for the first time, that offer a unique perspective on how the vessel was conceptualized. Fanhome is promising that there will be 20 new models in their line-up that will spotlight hero ships currently featured on the contemporary Star Trek original series.
It’s an exciting time to jump into the mix, and with new seasons of Strange New Worlds coming up and other new Star Trek offerings on the board, this collection is sure to take off!
